FAQ’S

For those looking to get rid of their submental fullness, otherwise known as the dreaded double-chin, Kybella is an FDA-approved, non-surgical option with proven results.

There can be many factors that attribute to a double chin such as genetics, weight gain, and aging, and it can affect both men and women. In fact, according to a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 67% of the people surveyed are bothered by the fat under their chin.

The Kybella® procedure involves several injections of Deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that supports the absorption and breakdown of dietary fat. Kybella destroys the fat cells near the points of injection so that they may no longer store or accumulate fat, leading to a noticeable reduction of fat and more desirable definition along the jaw. The optimal aesthetic results can be achieved in 6 treatments or less.

Males or females over the age of 18 who are bothered by the fat accumulated under their chin, and cannot get rid of it through diet and exercise alone. Those that do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure, but still wish to permanently reduce fat in the area.

The Kybella® treatment utilizes tiny needles in order to inject the Deoxycholic acid into the target area. When you arrive at your appointment the area with being prepped with a cleansing agent, and ice will be applied to numb it prior to the injections. Due to the icing and tiny needles, this is a very well-tolerated procedure and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.

After your Kybella® treatment, you may experience erythema (redness), mild swelling, potential bruising, tenderness, or mild discomfort, and numbness. The swelling will be most noticeable in the first 3 days after your Kybella® treatment but will subside within a few days to weeks. The tenderness and numbness can last anywhere between a few days to a few weeks, but none of the reported side effects is long-lasting.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Lieman will assess your submental fullness and develop an individualized treatment plan just for you. Typically, patients need at least 2 treatments to see results, but some patients may need up to 6 treatments for the best outcome. Treatments are spaced about 4 weeks apart and most patients will see changes starting as early as six weeks to 3 months.

Once the fat cells are destroyed by the Kybella® treatment those cells can no longer be stored or accumulate fat. Therefore, once you’ve reached your desired aesthetic goal further treatment is not expected.
